GrandCentral and my Communication Addiction

Grand Central LogoI’ve moved my phones to Grand Central as of this afternoon. The email has been sent out telling everyone to call me there now, all my contacts have been added, and I think I’m ready to go. I’ll have to keep tweaking it as I become more familiar with the finer points, but I think this is going to be a great service for me in keeping myself focused and moving towards less clutter in my life.

I’ve been recognizing that I’m truly addicted to email and RSS and communications in general. I want to know what’s going on, I want to talk to people, even when there’s nothing to say. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I have trouble turning it off and saying ‘no’. Even now I’m looking at my system bar for the now removed email and chat indicators. Taking a tip from Tim Ferris (one of many), I’m only going to be checking email and RSS at set times of the day. I know that I don’t have to do things right away, and that if that email isn’t answered in 10 minutes it’s not the end of the world. My priorities have been skewed, and as I simplify I’m also working towards greater efficiency.
